One of my favorite parts of photographing actor headshots is seeing the range of expression and energy each client brings into the studio. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Stephen, who came in ready to capture both his funny, playful side and his more serious, dramatic edge.
From the start, Stephen knew exactly what he was looking for in his session. He wanted a mix of tight headshots, classic crops, and a few three-quarter shots to give casting directors plenty of variety. With plans to use these images for both modeling and acting opportunities, versatility was key.
Bringing Personality Into the Session
Stephen described himself as funny, creative, and uplifting, and that energy came through the moment he stepped in front of the camera. He was totally comfortable being photographed — a huge advantage for an actor who needs to convey personality in a single frame. His questionnaire revealed his love for music by Tyler the Creator, Drake, and Joyner Lucas. We curated the playlist to match his vibe, helping keep the energy relaxed and fun.
Balancing Playful & Serious
The goal was to capture both ends of Stephen’s personality: the humor and creativity that make him stand out, along with the serious and grounded side that casting directors also look for. His expressive eyes became the star of the shoot, naturally drawing focus and helping create images that feel both approachable and powerful.
Studio & Natural Light Variety
In addition to classic studio setups with colorful and grey backdrops, Stephen also wanted a few outdoor portraits. Natural light is such a beautiful way to bring a different tone to headshots — softer, more cinematic, and a little more candid in feel. The combination gave Stephen a full gallery that showcases range, adaptability, and personality — exactly what casting directors love to see. SEE PART TWO BLOG.
Final Thoughts
Working with Stephen was an absolute joy. His ease in front of the camera, paired with his vision for how he wanted to be portrayed, made the session flow seamlessly. The final collection reflects who he is: funny, creative, uplifting, and ready to take on his next casting opportunity.
